A current vacancy exists within the Oakhurst Branch for a part-time position of 30 hours per week.

Under immediate supervision, greets and assists library patrons; provides administrative support and circulation services; uses and updates computer databases; participates in community outreach and education activities and events related to library services and programs; and performs related duties as assigned.

SUPERVISION RECEIVED AND EXERCISED

Receives immediate supervision from assigned supervisory or management personnel. Exercises no direct supervision over staff.

Some knowledge and abilities may be performed by positions at the entry (I) level in a learning capacity.

  • Conducts circulation activities, including checking library materials in and out, calculating and collecting fines and fees, and explaining County library circulation policies and procedures.
  • Contacts patrons regarding overdue books and materials; receives, verifies, and releases materials for on-line reserve requests; reserves library materials and notifies patrons of their availability; initiates and processes inter-library loan requests.
  • Sorts books and related materials according to alphabetical, numerical, and categorical systems; collects, stacks, shelves, and re-shelves library materials; disinfects materials returned to the library prior to returning to circulation; examines, stamps and covers new books, DVD's and audiobooks.
  • Processes library card applications and issues library cards; maintains records of current patron information utilizing the library automation system.
  • Assists with community outreach and education regarding assigned library programs and services; participates in community outreach events; prepares related flyers and materials.
  • Receives, researches, and responds to patrons' reference requests; refers questions of a more technical or detailed reference nature to professional Librarian staff or other library locations as appropriate; locates and provides requested materials and information.
  • Assists and instructs patrons in the proper use of library equipment and reference sources including internet, electronic databases, and other technology devices.
  • Monitors and assesses the condition of books, audio/visual, and other materials; performs minor mending of materials or refers to others for repair.
  • Assists patrons with computer-related questions, including logging onto e-mail, Wi-Fi, and job sites; performs basic troubleshooting on various tablets, smartphones, and e-readers.??
  • Assists with a variety of literature-based and educational programs and activities.
  • Performs standard office support work such as answering telephones, maintaining files, and operating computer terminals and other standard office equipment, orders office and library supplies.

Education and Experience:

Any combination of training and experience that would provide the required knowledge, skills, and abilities is qualifying. A typical way to obtain the required qualifications would be:
  • Equivalent to completion of the twelfth (12th) grade.
  • Two (2) years of clerical experience.
Licenses and Certifications:

  • None required.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS

Must possess mobility to work in a standard office setting and use standard office equipment, including a computer; vision to read printed materials and a computer screen; and hearing and speech to communicate in person and over the telephone. Standing in and walking between work areas is frequently required. Finger dexterity is needed to access, enter, and retrieve data using a computer keyboard or calculator and to operate standard office equipment. Positions in this classification frequently bend, stoop, kneel, and reach to perform assigned duties, as well as push and pull drawers open and closed to retrieve and file information. Employees must possess the ability to lift, carry, push, and pull materials and objects up to 25 pounds.

ENVIRONMENTAL CONDITIONS

Employees work in an office environment with moderate noise levels, controlled temperature conditions, and no direct exposure to hazardous physical substances. Employees may interact with upset staff and/or public and private representatives in interpreting and enforcing departmental policies and procedures.


WORKING CONDITIONS

Some positions are assigned work schedules which include evening and weekend hours.

Placement on Eligible List:
The Civil Service Commission may limit the number of qualified applicants eligible to participate in the examination process. If two or more candidates have the same total final score on an examination, they shall be ranked in order of their scores in that portion of the examination which has the greatest weight. The names of two or more eligibles having final ratings which are identical shall be grouped on the eligible list as tie names with equal rank for certification and appointment purposes.


Candidates who are successful in all phases of the examination process will be placed on an eligible list, in rank order based on a calculation of their total score from the examination process. The eligible list established by this recruitment will be active for a minimum of six (6) months or one (1) year, unless otherwise determined by the Director pursuant to section 6-4 (b) and may be extended for up to an additional year by the Commission.
Benefits of employment with the County of Madera include:

Individuals with no current or prior qualifying public sector service, and who are defined as new members or new employees under the Act, will be eligible for the 2% @ 62 retirement benefit formula (based on the average compensation over 36 consecutive months with the employee paying 7.75% toward the retirement cost);
  • County participates in the Public Employees' Retirement System Health Benefit Program and for certain selected health plans, the County pays 95% of health insurance premium for employee and 50% for either two-party or dependent coverage;
  • Additional salary increases after 10, 15, and 20 years of service.
