Established in 2011 by actor and humanitarian Gary Sinise, the Gary Sinise Foundation honors and supports our active-duty military, veterans, first responders, and their families. Through programs designed to inspire and uplift our nation’s heroes, we aim to make a meaningful difference in the lives of those who serve and sacrifice for our freedom.

Position Summary

The Gary Sinise Foundation Curator will be a vital member of the Foundation’s Programs, Outreach, and Education Team, reporting directly to the Director of Education and working closely with the Vice President of Outreach. This role will be responsible for overseeing the preservation, archiving and storytelling efforts surrounding the history and impact of the organization. The Education Curator will play and pivotal role in educational outreach, managing artifacts, and collaborating across departments to share the story of Gary Sinise and the Gary Sinise Foundation in meaningful and engaging ways to diverse audiences.

Key Responsibilities:

Historical Preservation and Artifact Management

  • Develop and implement efficient processes for archiving, storing, preserving and maintaining artifacts, memorabilia, and historical items significant to the history and mission of the organization.
  • Establish and document best practices for the long-term care and conservation of historical items and ensure compliance with industry standards for archiving and preservation.
  • Manage the intake of items gifted or donated to the organization including proper documentation, inventory management and storage.
  • Work closely with key stakeholders to identify and preserve artifacts or moments of historical importance for the organization.

Educational Outreach and Public Engagement:

  • Collaborate with the Education team to design and enhance programmatic offerings that align with the mission and values of the organization.
  • Develop interactive experiences, exhibitions, or presentations to communicate the legacy and impact of the organization to various audiences.
  • Oversee the operation and maintenance of the Education and Orientation Center, ensuring it delivers high-quality, engaging content for visitors.
  • Lead guided tours and host on-site field trips for schools, community groups, donors and other visitors, providing a personalized and immersive experience.
  • Partner with the Marketing and Communications team to create content, materials and campaigns that highlight the historical significance and ongoing contributions of the organization.

Creative Storytelling and Legacy Building:

  • Develop new and innovative ways to share the story of the organization, its founder, and the people it serves using both digital and in person platforms.
  • Document key moments in the organization’s history through photos, videos, and written materials to preserve its legacy.
  • Assist in curating special exhibits, events or campaigns that connect the public to the organization’s mission in meaningful ways.
  • Stay informed of best practices in storytelling and public history to ensure the organization’s narratives remain fresh, relevant, and engaging.

Administrative and Organizational Support:

  • Work cross-functionally with other departments, such as Philanthropy, Marketing, and Programs, to support initiatives that require historical or educational expertise.
  • Provide historical context or insights to support grant applications, fundraising campaigns, and donor engagement efforts.
  • Maintain and improve systems for data and artifact sharing across departments to facilitate collaboration.
  • Oversee financial tracking and budget management for items related to this role.
  • Provide support to other educational events and initiatives that may be necessary for this role.
  • Perform additional duties and initiatives as directed by foundation leadership, contributing to the organization’s mission and overall success.

Skills:

  • Thorough understanding of collections care, documentation, and ethical standards as defined by professional museum organizations
  • Outstanding writing, editing, and verbal communication skills with the ability to develop clear, professional content and reports.
  • Proven skill in crafting engaging and accessible narratives that bring collections, exhibitions, and community histories to life for a wide range of audiences.
  • Strong problem solving and critical-thinking skills’ able to anticipate challenges and propose solutions.
  • High level of organization and attention to detail; ability to manage multiple projects and deadlines with precision.
  • Ability to communicate effectively with diverse audiences, including donors, board members and the public.
  • Passion for and interest in serving the military, veteran, and first responder communities.
  • A collaborative spirit and a genuine desire to serve others, contributing to a positive and mission-driven team environment.

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree in history, museum studies, education, or a related field required. Master’s degree preferred.
  • Minimum of 3-5 years of experience in curation, archiving, museum work, or related role. Demonstrated experience in educational outreach or program development a plus.
  • Background in non-profits, military, or first responder support work is highly desirable.
  • Valid driver’s license and ability to travel as needed.

Work Environment:

  • This is an in-office role with standard work hours of 8am-5pm CST
  • Some travel (up to 30%) may be necessary, with occasional nights and weekends required for events
