About Olive Support Services (OSS)
Olive Support Services is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization serving the Antelope Valley community, including Palmdale and Lancaster. OSS brings subject matter expertise in diversity sensitivity and faith to ensure safe and therapeutic settings by requiring respect for diversity and inclusion.
OSS offers court-approved and evidence-based parenting classes, anger management, 52-week batterers’ classes, domestic violence victims’ classes, and life skills (including Deferred Entry of Judgment & Human Trafficking Victims Programs). Olive Support Services is a community-based organization, with a faith-based track of services, for individuals and families that are working on accomplishing their healthy goals.
Position Summary
We are seeking a passionate, organized, and community-driven individual to join our team as a Community Engagement & Tutoring Assistant. This multifaceted role combines community outreach and resource navigation with direct academic support to youth. The position is ideal for someone who enjoys working with people, is committed to educational equity, and wants to make a direct impact through both public engagement and tutoring.
The Assistant will represent Olive Support Services (OSS) at community events, support individuals and families in accessing local and county-wide resources, and provide academic and enrichment support to Transitional-Aged Youth (TAY) and other tutoring program participants.
Key Responsibilities
Community Engagement & Navigation
Act as the first point of contact for individuals seeking information or services, providing accurate and friendly support.
Assist individuals, families, nonprofits, and small businesses in understanding and accessing community and county resources.
Represent OSS at community events and outreach activities, strengthening visibility and building community relationships.
Collect, organize, and share key information that improves community access to services.
Use various media platforms, including social media, newsletters, and podcasts, to share community resources and promote OSS programs to broader audiences.
Maintain accurate records of community interactions and referrals.
Support internal communication by sharing community feedback with program staff.
Tutoring & Enrichment Support
Provide one-on-one and small group tutoring to Transitional-Aged Youth (TAY) and other students across various subjects, including math, science, and language arts.
Lead enrichment activities when school is out or homework is not assigned; Examples include STEAM projects, financial literacy, and soft skills development (e.g., public speaking, communication).
Foster a supportive and engaging learning environment that encourages student growth and skill-building.
Track student attendance, participation, and progress; report findings to program supervisors.
Collaborate with OSS staff to ensure programming aligns with students’ academic and developmental needs.
Administrative Support
Assist with data entry, documentation, and program-related communications.
Support the logistics and coordination of outreach events and tutoring sessions.
Help manage materials and resources needed for enrichment activities.
Qualifications
Associate’s degree required; a focus in education, social work, or a related field is preferred.
Prior experience in tutoring, teaching, community outreach, or customer service is a strong plus.
Strong interpersonal and communication skills; able to engage diverse audiences in person and over the phone.
Ability to lead academic and enrichment activities with creativity, patience, and flexibility.
Organized and self-motivated; able to manage multiple responsibilities in a fast-paced, part-time role.
Bilingual skills are a plus (Spanish/English preferred).
Comfortable lifting up to 30 lbs. and working in dynamic, public-facing settings.
Proficient in basic computer applications (MS Word, Excel, Google Suite).
