Provide developmental academic advising for new and continuing students using a case management approach; Support students in defining personal and academic career goals, interpreting and understanding placement scores, program curriculum and pre-requisites, and developing basic skills to register for courses, as appropriate. The Academic Advisor will refer students to appropriate internal and external resources that foster student success. This position reports to the Director of Academic Advising. Responsibilities include demonstrating strong commitment to student development and success through advocacy, positive attitude, adaptability, approachability, problem solving, and support; developmental academic advising to assist students in clarifying personal and academic career goals using appropriate student development, human development, and student learning theories; assisting students in interpreting placement scores, program curricula, and pre-requisites; helping students understand the College's registration process; maintaining current knowledge of academic programs, curriculum, practices, and policies; coordinating with Student Affairs and Academic Affairs to ensure accuracy of advising materials; possessing working knowledge of student financial assistance programs; managing academic advising caseload to promote retention, persistence, and success; assisting in development of Individualized Academic Plans; monitoring student progress through meetings, communications, interventions, assessments, and data collection; maintaining advising records in compliance with College and FERPA; developing and maintaining relationships with students, faculty, and staff; utilizing communication plans to engage the college community; fostering an inclusive environment; participating in professional development and college-wide committees. Other duties may be assigned. Education and experience requirements include a Bachelor's degree in education, psychology, counseling, social work, or related fields; minimum three years of experience in academic advising, admissions, career counseling or related higher education area or one year with a Master's degree; commitment to diverse communication; excellent communication and time management skills; working knowledge of word processing, spreadsheet, email, database applications including student records management systems and social media tools; administrative and organizational skills; employment contingent on official transcripts and background check.
